Served in Army Air Corps at Lae, New Guinea, during WWII. Grew up in Southern California as Fred Martin last name unknown. He dropped his last name at some point. His mother was Rose Kramer, who emigrated to U.S. from Tblisi, Georgia, with husband. Apparently she and husband were Jewish but father left family of Fred and Edna before they were cognizant and mother told them he had died. Information is very hazy. He was involved in the accidental shooting death of a friend and placed in juvenile confinement. Later worked as a high scaler on a dam construction during the Depression.
