Served in Army Air Corps at Lae, New Guinea, during WWII. Grew up in Southern California as Fred Martin last name unknown. He dropped his last name at some point. His mother was Rose Kramer, who emigrated to U.S. from Tblisi, Georgia, with husband. Apparently she and husband were Jewish but father left family of Fred and Edna before they were cognizant and mother told them he had died. Information is very hazy. He was involved in the accidental shooting death of a friend and placed in juvenile confinement. Later worked as a high scaler on a dam construction during the Depression. Had Michael after short tryst with Charles Davis, of Arkansas, apparently a returning soldier after WWII. Became pregnant out of wedlock and convinced Davis to marry her, but quickly separated. Not certain if a formal divorce was ever executed. Subsequently married Fred in Ferguson, Mo., and moved almost immediately to California. He was coach of softball team she played on.

Moved frequently in California. Started in apartment near Signal Hill in Long Beach. Moved to house in Long Beach just north off Bellflower Boulevard east of Naval Hospital soon afterward. Moved to Ridgecrest near China Lake Naval Base within two years. Forced to leave Ridgecrest after FBI background check discovered father had not died, thus losing security clearance. Moved to Wilmington, near Long Beach for short period, then to house in La Puente on Fellowship street near Glendora Boulevard in San Gabriel valley. After two years, moved to house a few miles away on Alwood Street near Lark Ellen. After a few years they moved about two miles away to a house on Maplegrove street that they had built on a vacant lot.
